Sailing under the stars, the water ripples and reflects the moonlight. The boat glides almost imperceptibly out of the still cove and onto the open sea, where it cuts through more turbulent waters, leaving a clear wake on the surface. Beneath the foaming waves, though, the immense ocean depths remain unchanged by the craft’s voyage.

This piece is centered around two contrasting sonorities which anchor the harmony. The first is a lush chord which appears early on in the calm introduction and uses all the black keys of the piano. The fast section introduces the second sonority, an augmented triad with a major 7th. These two harmonic centers vie for prominence throughout the fast section until the former finally gets the last word.
